Mattress (1), intended in particular to avoid decubitus, comprising a sheath defining a hollow cavity (6) and a support means arranged in the hollow cavity. The sheath includes an upper layer and a lower layer, the support means being preferably air. The mattress is provided with means (9, 10) for measuring the distance between the upper layer and the lower layer, and with means for addition or removal of fluid to or from the hollow cavity, depending on the measured decrease in the distance between the upper layer and the lower layer, or respectively as a function of the measured increase in the distance between the upper layer and the lower layer. <IMAGE>
