The invention concerns a method of manufacturing unfinished special steel blanks, in particular special-steel strip, the method comprising, as necessary, rolling and annealing of cast material and de-scaling, particularly by picking in an aqueous bath, and, in the case of strip, winding of the strip if necessary. In order to achieve greater flexibility with regard to the steel qualities which can be processed and the dimensions of the steel blanks which can be produced, the invention calls for the material to be processed in batches, preferably to be annealed, cooled and subsequently, without intermediate storage, de-scaled in batches. According to a method comprising the steps of casting, if necessary rolling of the cast material, cooling and de-scaling, in particular by pickling in an aqueous bath, and, if necessary, winding special-steel strip blanks on to a roller, to achieve the above-mentioned advantages, the invention calls for casting and subsequent de-scaling to be carried out in batches, de-scaling being carried out without intermediate storage.
