PURPOSE:To improve phase control characteristics and more particularly the resolution of a display element, etc., to be wobbled by forming the liquid crystal oriented films to be formed on electrodes of the phase control element of polyimide. CONSTITUTION:The surfaces of transparent glass substrates 20, 21 are provided with transparent electrodes 13, 14 and are further formed with polyimide films 22, 23 as the liquid crystal oriented films thereon. These polyimide oriented films 22, 23 are subjected to prescribed rubbing treatments. The substrates 20, 21 with such oriented films are so assembled that the orientation treatment directions thereof are, for example, counterparalleled with each other on the opposite face. Glass beads 24 meeting the desired gap length are used as the spacers. The spacers are dispersed into a sealing material 25 for adhering the circumference in the case of the area smaller than the size of the transparent substrates, by which the gap between the substrates is controlled. |
