The invention relates to a method for disintegrating an object of elongate shape by electric discharge, in particular a thimble used in the vessel of a nuclear reactor, characterised in that it consists in causing an electric arc betweeen a hollow electrode (20) made of a refractory material and the end (6) of the thimble (4) to be disintegrated, which is introduced into a closed treatment enclosure (8), a flow of pressurised refrigerant fluid (13) passing through the electrodes so that the molten material removed from the thimble by electric discharge is solidified, entrained by the fluid and recovered by filtration before the fluid is recycled.
