PURPOSE:To permit an optical amplifier to efficiently operate in a 1.3mum band by replacing a part of fluorine of fluoride glass with at least one kind of halogen elements other than fluorine. CONSTITUTION:In the case of using ZrF4 glass as host material, when Cl, Br or I is added, F of the partial Zr-F bonding is replaced with Cl, Br or I. Zr-Cl or Zr-Br or Zr-I bonding which has smaller phonon energy than the phonon energy of Zr-F bonding is formed by such replacement, and multi-phonon modification probability from <1>G4 to <3>H5 is reduced. As a result, quantum efficiency of the transition from <1>G4 to <3>H5 is increased and a gain coefficient is improved. Therefore, when such core glass is used as an activating medium for a light amplifier, an optical fiber amplifier which operates with a high efficiency in a 1.3mum band can be constituted, and high performance and economical light communication system is allowed. |
