The collating machine is intended to put book blocks together, the collating machine operating at high operating speeds, avoiding any damage to the folded sheets which may result therefrom, and itself requiring a relatively low degree of technical outlay. This solution is achieved in that the folded sheets (4) which are to be separated are provided in upright stacks (3), and the separating operation takes place by means of gripping members (13) which swing in the conveying direction of the book blocks which are to be collated, accelerate the respective folded sheet (4) to the speed of the conveying device (17) over a relatively short path, namely in the region of the clearance (14), and transfer said sheet to the drivers (16) and are themselves immediately guided back again for the next separating operation. The invention can be used particularly advantageously in the high-performance sector for the separation of folded sheets which is to take place at a very high speed. <IMAGE>
