The composite planar material of the invention consists of a thermoplastic film (2) which on one face has a multiplicity of small-sized perforation pits (4) and at least the other face of which, which is smooth, is covered with predominantly thermoplastic fibres (3) which are bonded to each other and to the film (2), preferably including at the inner walls (5) of the pits (4). It can be employed as breathable film for absorbent hygiene articles, especially nappy-pants. A process of manufacture consists: a) in dispersing a sheet of predominantly thermoplastic fibres (3) on a thermoplastic film (2), b) in introducing it onto a surface provided with orifices, c) in heating to a temperature close to the softening temperature of the two thermoplastic materials while creating a suction through the orifices, so as to obtain the snapping of the film in line with the said orifices. <IMAGE>
