Stabilized collagenase compositions and methods for their preparation are disclosed. A collagenase solution is mixed with a buffer and a stabilizer and lyophilized. The stabilizer can be a protein or oligosaccharide. Stabilized collagenase compositions retain a high degree of hydrolytic activity and solubility following lyophilization and long term storage.
