PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a resin composition for imparting gas barrier properties which comprises an aqueous polyester dispersion of high solid content, giving a high degree of freedom in adjusting liquid physical properties by post-treatment and advantageous in forming a dry powder, is excellent in the prevention of environmental problems and in gas barrier properties, and has excellent characteristics such as water resistance, weatherability, processability and adherence, to provide a method for imparting gas barrier properties, and to obtain an object having gas barrier properties imparted thereto. SOLUTION: The resin composition capable of forming a gas-barrier film comprises an aqueous polyester dispersion which contains (i) a water-insoluble polyester, (ii) a polyester polymer containing sulfonate groups bonded to the polymer, in an amount of 0.1-1.5 mmol equivalents in terms of SO3- groups for 1 g of the polymer, and (iii) water, which is apparently a solid having a solid matter content of at least 60 wt.% and the solid matter of which can be uniformly dispersed in the form of fine particles in the aqueous phase by adding water. The composition is used for the method for imparting gas barrier properties and gives a gas-barrier film. The composition serves to impart gas barrier properties to an object to give e.g. a gas-barrier structure.
