The invention relates to spreader support rings for the support of soft seals (for example, O-rings) which are to be drawn on to cylindrical mandrels which serve as an expanding device for tubes or tube-like articles and which are at the same time loaded with extremely high hydraulic pressures. This spreader support ring is characterised in that it consists of a specific form-memory alloy, in which the effect of pseudoelasticity (also called superelasticity) occurs. In a specific temperature range, these materials exhibit a high degree of elastic stretching, so that the support ring produced from them can execute, without permanent deformation, the high adaptation of diameter required for tube expansion. <IMAGE>
