PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst for manufacturing ethylene oxide which is new and indicates an outstandingly higher selectivity compared to a conventional catalyst by allowing silver, tungsten and an alkali metal to be borne on a porous carrier. CONSTITUTION:The subject catalyst for manufacturing ethylene oxide by which to manufacture ethylene oxide through the oxidation of ethylene using oxygen, is formed by allowing silver, tungsten and an alkali metal to be borne on a porous carrier. A chemical reaction which enables ethylene to be converted to ethylene oxide using the catalyst is realized by a routine operation. For the chemical reaction, it is preferable to use 1 to 40vol.% ethylene, 1 to 20vol.% of oxygen in the presence of generally, a diluent, for example, a specified ratio of methane, that is, 0 to 70vol.%. Oxygen can be supplied in the form of air, for example, industrial oxygen. In addition, a hot spot in the catalyst is prevented from forming by adding, for example, ethylene dichloride as a reaction modifier. Consequently, the performance, especially the selectivity of the catalyst is improved significantly and displayed satisfactorily. |
