For road traffic (10, 11) there is proposed a message transmission system (information transfer system) which consists of transponders (14), arranged at intervals along the carriageway, and transceiver parts fitted in vehicles (11). The transponders (14) are passive data carriers which emit information signals (16) upon reception of energy (17) transmitted by the vehicle via the transmitter part, which information signals (16) are received by the receiver part on the vehicle and used by a vehicle computer (18) for influencing the drive train of the vehicle, for informing the driver and/or for locating the vehicle. <IMAGE>
