A fuel injection pump for an engine has a pump housing, fuel directed into a low-pressure chamber (200) in the pump housing being directed through a passage on the outer circumference of a piston (5) into a high-pressure chamber. The passage comprises the fuel passages (10, 11, 13), which are connected to the low-pressure chamber, a shut-off opening (21) which is connected to the fuel passage, a groove which is formed on the outer circumference of the piston (5) so that it extends in the circumferential direction of the latter and is connected to the shut-off opening (21), an outlet opening (23), which is formed on the outer circumference of the piston (5), and a shallow opening (43), which is formed on the outer circumference of the piston and connects the groove and the outlet opening to one another. With its one end, the outlet opening (23) extends by a certain amount beyond the one end of the shut-off opening (21) in the direction of the piston end towards the high-pressure chamber (200). The groove is formed on the outside circumference of the piston so that it extends part way or all round the piston. <IMAGE>
