The invention concerns a wheelchair with a seat, two side-located drive wheels and front and rear running wheels which are free to rotate about substantially vertical axes. The drive wheels are mounted at least approximately coaxially with each other about an axis which extends across the wheelchair below the central area of the seat. Together with its respective axle bearing, each drive wheel can be individually rotated, about a substantially vertical axis, between a fixed position for straight-line travel and a pivoted position for sideways travel. A first part of the wheelchair frame, comprising the chassis and the drive wheels and rear running wheels, and a second part of the wheelchair frame, comprising the seat and back (if any) and the front running wheels, can be rotated with respect to each other about a transverse horizontal axis. |
