PURPOSE:To isomerize the titled compound into an alkylidenenorbornene by using a catalyst consisting of a solid base produced by pretreating alumina with an alkali metal carbonate in an inert gas atmosphere and heat-treating the pretreated alumina and an alkali metal at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:An alkenylnorbornene is isomerized to an alkylidenenorbornene by using a catalyst consisting of a solid base produced by pretreating an alumina (preferably an alumina having large surface area, e.g. gamma-, x- or rho-type alumina) with an alkali metal carbonate in an inert gas and heating the pretreated alumina and an alkali metal at 200-350 deg.C, preferably 220-340 deg.C. The weight ratio of the solid base catalyst to the alkenylnorbornene is usually about 1/3,000-1/20. The isomerization can be carried out in extremely high efficiency with reduced amount of catalyst without necessitating adjuvant. The objective compound having high quality can be produced safely in high yield without danger of ignition. |
