The invention relates to a mechanical direction indicator for bicycles which makes it possible for the cyclist to be able to indicate the intended change in direction without taking a hand off the handlebars. The direction indicator comprises a flat sleeve which is attached to the handlebars. Situated within the sleeve are two slides with cats eyes fixed to their outer ends. By extending one of the slides (to the left or right) the change in the direction of travel is indicated. By connection to the dynamo drive of the bicycle additional illumination of the direction indicator occurs.
