In order to extract exhaust gases from motor vehicles (15) moving one behind the other, a suction pipe is moved in behind the moving motor vehicle (15) and made to follow the said vehicle without contacting it. A dimensionally stable suction funnel (12) of the suction pipe (6) is fitted onto the exhaust pipe (14) in such a way that the exhaust gases are reliably carried away over the test distance. In this way, fully automatic operation of the extractor device during testing, repair or final inspection of motor vehicles is ensured without the risk of damage to the bodywork. <IMAGE>
