A mixt. of polymer materials has toughness and brittleness values dependent upon different temps. and is cooled to a temp. below the brittleness point for at least one of the materials in the mixt., but above the brittleness point for at least one other material in the mixt. At this temp. the mixt. is subject to a fine decomposition mechanical effect, the brittle material being thus broken down into such small particles that it can be sepd. from the remainder, using a method dependent upon granular size. The temp. to which the mixt. is cooled is pref. minus 35 plus or minus 5 deg. C. The mixt. consists of at least one of the following material:-polyethene, crosslinked polyethene, polyvinyl chloride, softened polyvinylchloride, polypropene and polystyrene. The material rendered brittle at the low temp. is at least one of the following:- polyvinylchloride, softened polyvinylchloride, polypropene, polystyrene and rubber.
