<p>The invention relates to an improved apparatus and method for initiating and sustaining an oxidation reaction. A reducing agent (44) such as natural gas or hazardous waste, is introduced through inlet port (39) into a reaction zone (100) within a pressurized containment vessel (2). A permeable liner (80) is placed within the containment vessel (2) and around reaction zone (100). An oxidizer (20), preferably oxygen, is mixed with a carrier fluid (22), such as water, and the mixture is heated and pressurized to supercritical conditions of temperature and pressure. The supercritical oxidizer-carrier mix is introduced through fluid port (6) to the reaction zone (100) gradually and uniformly, over a comparatively large area, by forcing it radially inward through the permeable liner (80) and toward the reaction zone (100). A means (120) and method for cooling the exhausted by-products passing through exhaust funnel (108) and using them as a cleansing rinse are disclosed.</p> |
