A process for the preparation of an aldehyde by reacting the corresponding aryl methanol with a stable free radical nitroxide in the presence of a NOx-generating compound at a temperature in the range of from about 0 DEG C. to about 100 DEG C. and thereafter separating out the aldehyde.
