In order, starting from the known processes for the production of glass doped with a plurality of dopes (dopants) which modify its refractive index to varying extents, of which a first dope is introduced during the production of a precursor of the glass which is porous at least in the area to be doped, and the precursor containing the first dope is heated in an atmosphere containing a further dope, and the precursor is sintered to give the glass, to make the type and concentration of the dopes in the glass variable and modifiable in a targeted manner within broad limits, it is proposed according to the invention that the heating be carried out in an atmosphere in which, of the gaseous components present in chemical equilibrium between the precursor and the atmosphere at the heating temperature, a reaction product at least of the first and of the second dope and a doping component containing the further dope, but not the first dope, are present in predefinable concentrations, where the first and further dopes are fed to the atmosphere as such or in the form of a compound. |
