PURPOSE:To obtain a display mode optimum as a reflection type display by adopting the constitution that light scattering arises at the time of impressing an electric field and light absorption arises at the time of not impressing the electric field. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal mixture obtd. by mixing a high-polymer precursor, liquid crystal, chiral component and dichromatic dyestuff, respectively, is sealed into the spacing between two sheets of a substrate 1 and substrate 9 with electrodes (transparent electrode 2 and reflective electrode 8, i.e., the reflective electrode is used for one) subjected to orientation treatments (oriented films 3, 7) and is irradiated with UV rays in a liquid crystal phase. The electrooptical characteristic when the electric field (1kHz square wave) is impressed to the display element produced in such a manner is shown by a solid line. The term '100% reflectivity' indicates the reflectivity in the case of insertion of paper in a measuring system. The characteristic when a black absorption plate is disposed on the background and the similar measurement is made for the conventional mode of not incorporating the dichromatic dye is shown by a broken line. Since the electrode and the reflection plate are commonly used, the doubling of the display does not arise and the sharp display is attained. |
