Optical pulse retiming and reshaping circuit

An optical pulse retiming and reshaping circuit for soliton transmission in a transmission system (11) with distributed amplifiers transmits the pulses through an optical modulator (10), and uses a slow photodiode (31) to determine the mean power transmitted (or intercepted) by the modulator for use in generating a control signal (33) for use in a phase-locked loop to regulate the phase of an oscillator (34) driving the modulator. This overcomes noise, inter-pulse interference and the Gordon-Haus limitation.
