<p>A method for separating conjunct polymers which are formed as byproducts of acid catalyzed isoparaffin-olefin alkylation and sulfolane from a mixture (10) containing conjunct polymers, sulfolane, and hydrofluoric acid comprises: (a) separating hydrofluoric acid in a distillation/stripping tower (20) with a gas (12), to obtain an intermediate stream (16) containing less than 30 % hydrofluoric acid by weight; (b) gravitationally separating the intermediate stream (16) in a separator (40) into a more dense sulfolane-enriched stream (47) and a less dense conjunct polymer-enriched stream (46); (c) distilling said more dense sulfolane-enriched stream (47) in a vacuum distillation tower (50) to provide an overhead stream (52) containing a higher sulfolane concentration than said more dense sulfolane enriched stream of step (b) and a bottom stream enriched in conjunct polymers (54).</p> |
