The safety sensor includes a front end sensor arrangement in a sensor housing. The sensor arrangement is connected to an amplifier. The electrical state of the sensor arrangement for external proximity acts upon operating elements, and the current representing the operating state of the amplifier is output at electrical contacts. One or more conductive tracks run within the housing so that an interruption of a track due to mechanical damage of the housing causes a signal on one of the amplifier contacts, which signals a fault function of the sensor. ADVANTAGE - Outputs signal when mechanical damage occurs to sensor housing for deduction of sensor endangering function.
