Polyimide of formula (1) is new (where A = gps. of formula (2) or (3); X = CO or SO2; R1 = CH3, R2 = R3 = H; or R1 = R2 = CH3, R3 = H or R1 = CH3, R2 = R3 = 1-6C alkyl or aryl or R1 = CH3, R3 = H, R2 = 1-6C alkyl or aryl; Y = gps. of formula (4), (5) or (6). USE/ADVANTAGE - As gas exchange membrane. Improved selectivity and permeability.
