New 2-tri:fluoro:methyl:thiadiazolyl-coumarin derivs - useful as fluorescent pigments for colouring transparent or translucent plastics

Coumarin derivs. of formula (I) are new; where R1 = H or CN; Y = a gp. of formula (Y1) or (Y2) (with R2-R5 = 1-8C alkyl; (R4, R5 can also = H or 6-12C aryl). Also claimed are a process for the prodn. of (I) and intermediate prods. of formula (II) where R7 = 1-8C alkyl; R8 = H or COOR9 (with R9 = 1-8C alkyl). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for colouring transparent or translucent plastics (claimed). (I) are new fluorescent cpds. which are useful for the prodn. of fluorescent effects in acrylics, polycarbonate, cellulose esters, polystyrene, ABS, polyolefins, etc., e.g. for decorative packaging applications; compatability with plastics is good, even with polyolefins, esp. polyethylene.
