The installation of a system for interactive television means a large increase in choice for TV users and with it a desirable two-way traffic between user and broadcaster. Moreover, this reduces the enormous vulnerability of, for example, the public telephone network to instant telephone reactions of TV viewers. This is done by using a number of measures such that: a. the algorithm implemented in the software of the domestic TV unit that controls the interactive traffic includes a random process that, for example, provides for a probability distribution, an adjustment in the capacity of the traffic on the public networks, a congestion- limiting operation during large traffic demands and the provision of a strategy for controlling the traffic; b. the algorithm is in addition linked to the reaction results of the user; c. the algorithm is provided with a number of supporting parameters, such as directing the traffic according to the geographic location, demographics and individual requirements, or any predetermined user groups. The usual information circuit of television studio, television network and public telephone network also includes a domestic TV unit (decoding module) fitted with a microcomputer having its own control program, and an exchange (central computer).
