PURPOSE:To provide a new compound useful as an immunostimulating agent, etc., owing to its differentiation-inducing action on animal cell and stimulating action on B cell. CONSTITUTION:The glycosphingolipid of formula I (R is group of formula II or formula III). The compound can be produced by culturing Sphingomonas paucimobilis [e.g. Sphingomonas paucimobilis KK0001 (FERM P-11820)] to collect a large amount of cells, freeze drying the cells, extracting the cells successively with acetone and chloroform/methanol (2:1 V/V), separating into a solvent fraction and the cell residue, extracting the cell residue with chloroform/methanol (1:3 V/V), subjecting the obtained crude extract fraction to silica gel chromatography treatment, eluting with mixed solvents of chloroform/methanol at mixing ratios of 2:1, 1:1 and 1:3 and separating the objective compound from the fraction eluted by the 1:3 mixed solvent. |
