PURPOSE:To excavate a tunnel of desired cross section by installing a cutter head equipped with a cutting edge while allowing it to freely move back and forth along its axis, and reciprocating the cutter head by means of a cylinder provided inside a shield, thereby excavating the tunnel. CONSTITUTION:A cutter head 11 comprising a cutting edge 23 installed on an elliptical or rectangular frame 22 is mounted on the end of a shield 1 in such a manner as to freely move back and forth along its axis. The cutter head 11 is longitudinally reciprocated by a cylinder device 32 to strike against and drill the natural ground and drilled earth and sand are slurried and discharged to the outside through a sludge pipe 6. Tunnels of various cross sections can thus be readily excavated. |
