Direct optical observations can be made of tissues, cells and the like within a living object by means of an in vivo measuring device (100) including an optical fibre needle (7) formed from a plurality of extremely thin, light transmitting optical fibres (70) bundled into a needle shape. The optical fibre needle (7) can be easily inserted deeply into the object so that its first tip end surface (7e1) contacts a portion to be measured. The first tip end surface (7e1) receives an optical image which is transmitted toward the second tip end surface (7e2) of the optical fibre needle (7). An objective lens (1) magnifies the optical image transmitted via the second tip end surface (7e2) to image pick up means (4). <IMAGE>
