A mitt, for use in catching a ball having close together hooks on its surface, has a rigid rear arcuate layer 13 and a woven fabric front layer 11. The layers 11 and 13 are separated and held apart by a centrally disposed resilient annular layer 15. The mitt is more reliable in use for ensuring that the ball releasably attaches to the mitt on impact than earlier proposed mitts.
