A facsimile apparatus in which whether or not remote retrieval of a received picture image is carried out and whether or not a password is used for the remote retrieval are previously registered in a remote retrieval controller through an operating unit. When a call is received in the remote retrieval mode, the remote retrieval controller creates a polling transmission document on the basis of the then received picture image and stores the document in a memory together with the necessary password. When a communication controller detects a call received for the remote retrieval, the remote retrieval controller judges whether or not it is previously set to accept the remote retrieval and also judges whether or not it is previously set to use the password. When the both are set, the remote retrieval controller transmits the above polling transmission document from the memory through the communication controller to a caller terminal.
