Light polarising film (I) contains 0.01-10 (pref. 0.5-6) wt. % bis-(p-substd.-aniline) or bis(2-(p-substd.-phenylazo)-1-hydroxy-naphthyl-6-amine) carboxylate or carbonate dyestuff(s) of formula (II); dichroitic dyestuffs (IIA) of formula (II) with specified substits. are also claimed. Y is the radical of a dicarboxylic acid, including carbonic acid; A is divalent naphthalenediazo gp. with up to 4 substits. of formula (III); n is 0 or 1; in (II), Q is -N=N-, -CH=N-, -N=CH- or -CH=CH-, R1-2 is SO3H or one of these is H, Me, halogen, NH2, NHCO-(1-4C)-alkyl, NHCO-Ph, OH or 1-4C alkoxy; or R1 + R2 is a 3-4-membered gp. forming a condensed bicyclic ring system with the benzene ring, opt. with 2-5 R11-14 substits(s) R11-14 is as R1-2 except the condensed ring; `Z1 is -Q1-R3, -p-Ph-CH=CH-R3, CF3, -CONH2, -CONHR4, -CON(R4,R5), -COOH, -COOR4, -CN, -NO2, -NH2, -NHR4, -NR4, R5, -OH, -OR4, -NHCOR4, -OCOR4, halogen or a (substd) heterocyclic gp. Pref. (I) has a matrix of PVA obtd. by alkaline hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate, opt. contg. comonomers, with a deg. of saponification of over 80, pref. 85-100 mol. %. (I) is drawn 300-1000% at elevated temp. pref. 100-200 deg.C. (I) may also contain a lower mono- or polyhydric alcohol, its ether, a lower amine or amide. ADVANTAGE - (II) are yellow to yellow-red dyestuffs with excellent dichroitic property, whilst most dichroitic polyazo dyestuffs are blue-red or blue and other yellow to yellow-red dyestuffs have insufficient dichroitic values for use in these films.
