PURPOSE:To improve oxidation resistance in high temp. environment by forming a metal carbide layer, interfacial reaction layer, and metal oxide layer on the surface of a carbon base body with a specified layer interposed. CONSTITUTION:On the surface of a carbon base material 1 such as graphite, an intermediate layer 2 of 20-1000mum thickness consisting of metal carbide including a metal carbide layer 3 and carbon including the base material 1 is formed by slurry method or the like. If necessary, the layer 2 is formed as a gradient-composition layer having the compsn. continuously or stepwise changed. Then, a multiple carbide layer 3 consisting of Si, etc., is formed on the layer 2 by slurry method, etc., and further, an interfacial reaction layer 4 is formed on the layer 3. This interfacial layer 4 contains a material produced by the chemical reaction between a metal oxide layer 5 and the layer 3 at high temp. in an oxidative atmosphere. Then, a metal oxide layer 5 containing a mixture of one or more oxides of Si, Zr, etc., is formed by slurry method or the like by heating. Thus, an oxidation-resistant material is produced. |
