PURPOSE:To effectively introduce a carboxyl group into an aromatic carboxylic acid, etc., under mild conditions by reacting an aromatic carboxylic acid, etc., with a carbon tetrahalide, etc., in the presence of cyclodextrin and an alkali metal hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R<1> is H, alkyl, etc.; R<2> is H, alkyl, etc., and the bond position of R<2> is ortho or meta to COOR<1>), formula II (R<3> is H, OH, alkyl, etc.), formula III or formula IV (X is O, CH2, SO2, etc.) or its derivative is made to react with carbon tetrahalide, preferably carbon tetrachloride, etc., in the presence of cyclodextrin such as beta-cyclodextrin and an alkali metal hydroxide, preferably sodium hydroxide. Thereby, hydrogen bound to the aromatic ring of the above-mentioned compound is replaced with the carboxy group to introduce the carboxyl group into the aromatic ring. |
