In the analysis of a flowable material i.e. a solid liquid or paste, a quantity of said material is placed in a bag, the bag sealed and the bag and its contents exposed to radiation to cause the materials to emit X-rays which are subject to spectrometric analysis. The material of the bag is such that it is substantially unaffected by radiation and exhibits a low response in those portions of the X- ray spectrum of interest in the materials analysed. The preferred material is polyethylene terephthalate sheet. When the bag is exposed to radiation the surface of the bag is preferably flattened in register with an opening of the housing of the X-ray analysis instrument. The bags of materials are preferably prepared in a bagging machine 14, stamped with identifying characters and sealed in 18 and transported by conveyer 20 to the window of the X-ray analysis instrument 22. Where the conveyer stops, an hydraulic platform 30 is elevated to press the bag against the window which is protected with a radiation transparent screen 29. The material is irradiated and the emitted X-rays analysed, when the conveyer moves on to discharge the analysed sample.
