PURPOSE:To obtain a microorganism, suitable for use in a method for biodegrading phenolic compounds and having the ability to biodegrade the phenolic compounds and the method for biodegrading the phenolic compounds using the microorganism. CONSTITUTION:The microorganism is obtained by screening Pseudomonas.cepacia KK01 strain having the ability to decompose cresol in addition to that to decompose phenol in a culture medium containing the phenol or cresol as only one carbon source obtained from the intestine of Nasutitermes takasagoensis Shiraki and isolating the strain. Thereby, the biodegrading treatment of the phenol or cresol contained in a waste liquor, etc., can be carried out by using the isolated strain.
