The numbering procedure, esp. for articles obtd. by means of at lost pattern or mould of an expanded material such as expanded polystyrene, consists of using a stylus (2) with a heated tip to mark the surface of the pattern or mould (1). The stylus is actuated by a computer-controlled carriage (3) and connected to a heater (5) by a cable (7). During the marking operation the stylus is kept at a distance of about 1mm from the surface to be marked, and its temp. is regulated at about 350 deg. C. The stylus is able to move, for example, through three co-ordinates by means of the carriage, which has motors, guide rails and sensors, or the stylus can move in two co-ordinates and the marked surface in the third. USE/ADVANTAGE - Marking moulded workpieces. Allows mould or pattern to be identified without defacing surface of workpiece.
