Quinoxalinepentamethine dyes of the formula where R1 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C22-alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted C5-C7-cycloalkyl, R2 is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or C1-C6-alkyl, Y is a radical of the formula -N=C(CH3)- or -N(R1)-CO-, where R1 is as defined above, Z1 and Z2 are each hydrogen or together are unsubstituted or substituted C2-C3-alkylene, X(-) is an anion and the rings A and B independently of each other may be substituted and/or benzofused and are useful in optical recording media.
