The invention relates to primary galvanic cells (batteries) for use with salt water electrolytes, such as sea water. The cell has a rod like anode made preferably of a magnesium alloy, and a cathode consisting of a stainless steel substrate coated with a catalyst for the reduction of oxygen. Examples of catalysts are cobalt spinel, cobalt nickel spinel and active carbon. The cell can be constructed with the cathode coaxially arranged around a rod like anode. The catalysts, which are the basis of this invention, have the ability to stimulate the reduction of oxygen that is dissolved in salt water. This stimulation of oxygen reduction will lead to an increased voltage of the galvanic cell at a given current load and in addition contribute to an increased loadability when the catalytic active biofilm is lacking. |
