A fuel comprises a major proportion of a hydrocarbon oil having a boiling-point of at least 140 DEG C., 20-500 p.p.m. by weight of an ashless oil-soluble dispersant and 0.005-0.25 wt. per cent of an alkyl nitrate. The fuel may also contain an oil-soluble or oil-dispersible compound of a Group IIA metal. The dispersant may be a copolymer having both oleophilic and polar groups or a compound having one or more polar groups and a C30-C200 hydrocarbon chain. Many examples of dispersants are given which include copolymers of acrylates and methacrylates, N-vinylpyrrolidone, vinylpyridines, unsaturated esters having free hydroxyl and/or amine groups, vinyl esters of saturated carboxylic acids and the reaction product of a polyamine with succinic acid. The Group IIA metal compound may be an oxide or carbonate or a salt of a sulphonic, naphthenic, alkyl salicylic or alpha-alkylalkane monocarboxylic acid (many examples being given). The fuel may also contain the condensation product of a chlorinated wax, phenol and phthalyl chloride, 2,6-ditertiary butyl-4-methyl phenol, olefin/maleic anhydride copolymers, and disalicylalethylenediimine. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 802,612.
|
