A selective call receiver (30) includes a receiver (34) for receiving a selective call message. A memory (44) stores the selective call message as a plurality of screens. A microprocessor (36), including a controller (52), along with user input controls (40) allow a user to navigate through the plurality of screens to locate a desired screen. A display (42) is used to display the desired screen. The microprocessor (36) is capable of processing a new selective call message without interrupting the navigation of the controller (52) or the displaying of the desired screen.
