A process for the production of sulphonium salts of carboxylic acids or sulphonic acids comprises reacting a thioether with a vic-alkylene oxide and a carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid at a temperature of from 20‹ to 80‹ C. and without using water. Examples of tris-(#-hydroxyethyl) sulphonium and bis-(#-hydroxyethyl)-2- hydroxy - 3 - chloropropylsulphonium carboxylates and sulphonates are given. |
