Products with a m.pt. of over 1000 deg.C is vitrified in a vessel made of refractory material. The vessel (1) is a horizontal cylinder, open at one end, with an electro-burner mounted at the other end. This heater produces a radiant flame. A bath (3) in the base of the vessel holds the prod. which leaves by overflowing a weir. The length of the vessel is pref. at least double its height. Material is added to the vessel via an opening (9) in the side, about 1/10th the size of the long dimension, and less than 3/4 of the transverse dimension. The overflow (6) where melted material leaves may be situated near the heater (4) ensuring material is fluid, or at the opposite end, to ensure the entire volume is melted, specially if raw material is added cold. Dividing the bath into two compartments, separated by a weir also helps ensure all material is melted. USE/ADVANTAGE - Vitrification of solids, pastes or liquids at over 1000 deg.C, e.g. mineral prods., magnets, etc. Operation is automated, as the vessel is emptied by overflowing.
