Stacker crane comprising a vertical mast (1) displaceable horizontally by at least one travelling device (9, 10), a vertically displaceable elevating platform (12) guided on the mast and an extension unit (25) arranged on the elevating platform for loading and unloading is described. A traction element connected with the elevating platform and drivable by means of a drive roll arranged at the mast foot is guided by a deflecting guide roll, arranged in the area of the mast tip, the drive roll and a driven roll on the elevating platform. The driven roll may be braked to allow transmission of the lifting force from the traction element to the elevating platform for vertical displacement thereof or the elevating platform can be fixed by means of a stop brake between the mast and the elevating platform for movement of the extension unit, the driven roll then being released. A traction element is provided at the mast foot and the mast tip, the horizontally displaceable mast being drivable at both ends via the traction elements attached thereto. The storage and retrievable unit has good travel properties such as start-up speeds and travel speed as a result of the fact that the arrangement enables it to be of a lightweight construction. <IMAGE>
