In order to overcome the unfavorable a-priori decision within the HD-MAC system for the 100 Hz upconversion it necessitates a 100 Hz reference source for the a-posteriori decision in the HD-MAC encoder. Since it is not very likely that 100 Hz pick-up devices will come up in the next future some kind of motion compensated upconversion with HDTV quality can be introduced within the HD-MAC chain. This upconversion is carried out with a high accuracy allocating each pixel a separate motion vector or other motion information. The output supplies signals with 1250 lines, progressive, 50 Hz for the HD-MAC preprocessing and a signal with 1250 lines, interlace, 100 Hz as reference source for the error processing within the HD-MAC encoder, and motion vectors allocated to the progressive 50 Hz signal.

|
