The invention is of the field of mechanical transmission and its object is a device for varying transmission ratio between two toothed wheels connected via a chain. The device is characterised in that each of the drive members (20, 22) is supported in floating manner by a slide (24) moving in slides (14), in that the said locking means are made up of a plurality of notches (28) formed in rims (26) along the slides (14) and intended to house retractable studs (40) associated with the slides (24), each slide including two studs which are distant from one another by a separation equivalent to half the distance separating two neighbouring notches, in that the said radial displacement means are made up of a component (46) for controlling the variation in diameter of the wheel including at least a first incline (66, 68) for translation intended to actuate a finger (32) supported by each of the members (20, 22), and in that it comprises means for unlocking the studs (40). <IMAGE>
