The magnetic tape runs between two spools (2) in a housing (1) under frontal heads (3). The rear portion (8) of the cassette normally is held in the hand for insertion into recording equipment. One face (4) of the housing is formed by a chip card with an integrated memory circuit (M) and open contacts (K) accessible from outside.The semiconductor memory is integrated in a cassette housing part. The cover is provided with a transparent marking area (5) co-operating with an optical barrier in the recorder.
