PRODUCTION OF POLYPHENYLENE SULFONE FIBER

PURPOSE:To inexpensively produce a polyphenylene sulfone fiber excellent in heat resistance and chemical resistance and suitable for various kinds of filters and electrical materials by melt-spinning polyphenylene sulfide at a specific spinning rate or above and then treating the resultant fiber with an organic peroxide. CONSTITUTION:Polyphenylene sulfide is melt-spun at a spinning rate of >=2500 m/min to form a polyphenylene sulfide fiber having <1.339 specific gravity, 0.05-0.02 birefringence and >=1 denier fineness. Then the fiber is subjected to immersing treatment in a solution of an organic peroxide such as peracetic acid, perpropionic acid or perlactic acid to provide the objective polyphenylene sulfone fiber.
